What notary attestation actually does

A notary is a legal official authorised to witness signatures, administer oaths, and certify that a document was signed by the person it claims to be signed by, on a specific date. Notary attestation does not by itself make a document's contents legally binding — that comes from the agreement or declaration itself — but it creates a verified record of who signed it and when, which many institutions require before accepting a document.

This is different from registration, which is a separate process at the Sub-Registrar's office required for documents that transfer rights in immovable property, such as sale deeds and certain lease agreements.
